Be A Dandilion In The Asphalt

saplings5I was amazed when I noticed a small sapling braking through the asphalt, green shoots opening itself up to grow, reaching for the sun!  How does a small seed have enough strength or resolve to be able to do that? How can it produce enough force to push through a thick layer of asphalt?

How does it know in which direction to grow?    After all, there’s not much light or moisture passing through the paving? And where does the force to break through the paving come from?  I realize that this is a slow process, but it requires considerable force to actually break the paving.

There is a lesson here for us. We all should be like the seed or sapling. How? I have found wonderful lessons or teachings in nature. Realizing who nature’s author is – should prompt us to seek out these truths. There are many of them in your own backyard or neighborhood.

Consider this:

The seed is eager to grow and mature. It is meant to produce fruit.                                                   Are we eager for those things? Have you grown or are you in the same place you were 10, 20 years ago? Are you fruitful?

“But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.” (Matthew 13:23)

The seed has only one “mind” or purpose and that is to seek after the light.                                 Are we like the seed and resolved to never stop seeking after the light?

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness,                    but will have the light of life.” John 8:12                                                                                        “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them”. Ephesians 5:8-11

The seed is so determined for its growth and life. It is tenacious. Its unrelenting resistance against its obstacles will eventually give breakthrough and freedom to be what it was meant to be. Are we like the seed? Do you give up easily? Have you stopped praying for a breakthrough that you thought was once yours or promised to you? Have you lost your direction or the path the Lord placed you on?

No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed… Isaiah 54:17                                      Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil Proverbs 4:25-27                                                                                         Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance… Ephesians 6:18

So the next time you hold a seed in your hand or find some on your dinner plate                            .. popcorn, peanuts or beans.

Remind your self to be like the seed.                                                                                                      Remind yourself to seek only after the light.                                                                                         Remind yourself, that very often, not giving up will eventually give you a break-through to freedom and growth and fruitfulness.
